Surbiton
Dubbed “The Capital of Suburbia” by www.surbiton.com, Surbiton was immortalised in the 70′s sitcom The Good Life. Today Surbiton is a popular residential area with a thriving shopping centre, providing a real mix of individually owned shops co-existing alongside smaller chain store outlets. Bar and café culture is also a growing feature of the area, with newer venues working hand in hand with the older and more traditional pubs and restaurants.
There is evidence that a settlement has existed at Surbiton since at least 1178, at the time it was known as Suberton(e), (from the Old English south buritum’ or granary). Before the arrival of the railway, Surbiton was little more than a farm. The station opened in 1838, and was originally named Kingston-upon-Railway. Today commuters can reach Central London in about 18 minutes on a fast train; although it takes slightly longer to travel in the opposite direction to the South Coast and places such as Portsmouth and Southampton.
Residents of Surbiton have included the novelist Thomas Hardy and the writer Enid Blyton. More recent residents include the actress Charlie Brooks, actor Art Malik and TV personality Eamonn Holmes.
