New Malden
New Malden has the largest expatriate community of South Koreans in Europe, and is one of the most densely populated area of Koreans outside South Korea. The size of this community has been attributed to the former residence of the South Korean ambassador in nearby Wimbledon in the 1970’s. Many Koreans came to the area following his example, but when house prices rose in Wimbledon, they moved to New Malden.
Past and present residents of New Malden have included sculptor Anthony Caro, actress Diana Rigg and comedian Max Wall. The notorious Kray twins once owned The Duke of Wellington pub locally and world heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston attended the opening. The pub has since closed and the Krays are no longer local!
